CloseGrain, noise, and residue shape the visual language of this edition, giving the journal something tactile, something unmistakably made. At a moment when the arts are pressured by algorithms and automated intelligence, Sprung Formal Issue 21 insists on the trace of the maker: ink that bleeds, textures that clash, compositions that refuse polish.
The brutalist typography and grunge distortions align with the fractured voices shaping the poems and artwork, reflecting a broader social atmosphere of tension, rupture, and uncertainty. Instead of smoothing out that disorder, the design lets it remain visible. The pages feel gathered into immediacy, full of friction and human presence.
A raw process made visible.
